Pyrrhonists, Patricians, Platonizers. Hellenistic Philosophy in the period 155-86 BC Tenth Symposium Hellenisticum a cura di A. M. IOPPOLO and D. N. SEDLEY, pp. 432, 2007
Elenchos 47
ISBN 978-88-7088-536-1  € 40,00

The period 155-86 BC opened with the first arrival of Greek philosophers in Rome. It closed with Sulla's siege of Athens, an event which did more than anything to end that city's status as the philosophical metropolis of the ancient world. The intervening seventy years saw the philosophical schools acclimatizing themselves to new political and cultural circumstances. The mixture of tradition and adaptation that characterized this phase of philosophical history is the theme of the present book's eight chapters, all written by leading experts on Hellenistic philosophy.
